Carbon Monoxide Detector Law

 It requires any Illinois residence with fossil burning appliances, such as gas powered furnaces or water heaters, or with an attached garage, to install a carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of all sleeping areas.

Alarms can be battery powered, plug-in with battery backup, or wired in the AC power line with a secondary battery back-up. The alarm can be combined with smoke detecting devices if the combined unit complies with specific standards and the alarm differentiates the hazard.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. It is poisonous even to healthy people at high levels in the air. It can affect people with heart disease, and can affect the central nervous system.
